If you haven’t personalized your Facebook profile or page URL, now is the time! Of course, choosing a custom URL is optional and nothing will change with your current Facebook page if you don’t personalize it. You might be asking yourself, what is a custom Facebook URL? It simply changes your current FB profile/page URL from “http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234567″ to something more like “http://www.facebook.com/yournamehere”. This allows you to easily use your FB profile/page to network with others or to share it with family and friends.
There are a few guidelines on setting up your username. It must be at least five characters in length and only include alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9), or a period or full stop (“.”). Other than that, the only worry you may have is that your desired name may be chosen already. Typically, for business pages, you must have a minimum of 1000 fans. They do make exceptions though, especially if someone is found to be squatting your Trademarked business name.
Here’s how to choose your username: Log into your Facebook account and if you are not immediately prompted at the top of your homescreen, navigate to www.facebook.com/username. From there, FB will suggest a few names for you but you can go ahead and specify the username you want.
Be warned, for all of you who think that you can go and get facebook.com/apple and then turn around and sell it, you will soon find that Facebook has already placed precautionary measures that will allow companies and celebrities to take back the username. No squatting allowed!
