This tutorial will show you how to optimize a page for search engine ranking. The keyword phrase we will be targeting is a relatively simple one. The keyword phrase is “Cameron Moll Colosseo iPad Martian Giveaway“. It is simple because the likelihood of showing up highly on the first page of a Google search is high due to a number of factors:

  1. There aren’t many people competing for that phrase. Non-competitive keywords are easier to rank for.
  2. The phrase is very specific and longer than three words and considered a long-tail keyword phrase because although it is not targeted towards a mainstream audience, it is highly targeted to a niche market; people who are interested in finding out more about Cameron Moll’s Colosseo.
  3. We are going to use all of the known, non-blackhat, techniques known to work effectively.

SEO Page Structure

This is the part of the Search Engine Optimization that will focus on how the webpage is setup to increase the likelihood of showing up on Google’s first page.

Title Tag

Make sure the keyword phrase shows up in the title tag. If you start to introduce too many words that are not part of the keyword phrase, that will lessen the effectiveness of this technique. Try to narrow down the title tag to as few relevant words as possible. Take out small words like of, the, and etc. If possible, just make the title tag the keyword phrase and nothing else.

Domain

If possible, have the keyword phrase in the URL. URL’s cannot contain spaces so instead we will use underscores. If the keyword is part of the root domain, meaning it is “www.cameronmollcolosseoipadmartiangiveaway.com” then that would be optimal. In most cases, it would not make sense to purchase such a long domain name. For the sake of this tutorial, we will purchase www.cameronmollcolosseo.com.

H1 (Heading 1)

Using an H1 or heading tag lets Google know that the keyword is very relevant to the topic of the page. Make sure the keyword phrase is in the H1.

Internal Anchor Text

Google loves it when links from other pages point to your site using your keyword phrase. Again it is one of the major factors that Google uses to determine how relevant a keyword phrase is to a site. Of course, the site that is linking to you is important. The more relevant the sources are to your keyword, the higher their Google Page Rank, and the more varied the sources, the better. Quantity as well as quality matter. (See section below regarding “Sources of Incoming Links.”

External Anchor Text

If your page uses the keyword phrase to link to another page on your site or a page outside of your domain, then that will help give Google confidence that your page is truly about whatever keyword you are targeting. In our case, we are linking out to www.cameronmollcolosseo.com using the keyword phrase “Cameron Moll Colosseo iPad Martian Giveaway“.

Keyword Use

We have already used the our keyword phrase Cameron Moll Colosseo… a few times in this post. If you do it too often, Google will catch on and consider that keyword stuffing. Use the keyword phrase reasonably and you will maintain credibility with Google.

H2 and H3

Having your keywords in the Heading 2 and Heading 3 will help slightly although some optimizers would argue that this technique is not as effective as the others we have mentioned. Make sure not to abuse the keyword phrase.

Alt Text

Alt text is short for alternate text. It is used to describe what an image on the page is about. This is the text used for screen readers used by the visually impaired. It is also the text you see when you hover your mouse cursor over an image. If your keyword phrase is the alt text, then Google can “see” that you have pictures that are relevant to your keywords.

Bold, Italics and Underline

Emphasizing your keyword phrase using either bold, italics or underline gives Google a hint that the keyword phrase is important to your page. Cameron Moll Colosseo iPad Martian Giveaway!
